Launching Starlight into schools is about more than just technology. It’s about creating a safe, professional space for teachers to reflect on their practice without fear of judgement.

One of the most common questions we hear is around data, ownership, and transparency. Teachers rightly want to know:

  • Who owns the recordings?

  • How is the data used?

  • Can it ever be misused for surveillance or performance management?

To support school leaders and staff in answering these questions, we’ve created a short instructional walkthrough video. It sets out:

  • The purpose of recording and how notices are displayed in classrooms.

  • What the Data Agreement and Privacy Policy mean in practice.

  • How intellectual property is safeguarded.

  • Why transparency and anonymisation are built into the Constellation dashboard.

  • The protocols that ensure staff always remain in full control of their data.

At the heart of it all is a simple message:

Starlight exists to support teachers, not to judge them.

By being transparent, consistent, and clear in purpose, we can embed coaching programmes rooted in trust, reflection, and growth.

The Insight Engine is written by Adam Sturdee, co-founder of Starlight—the UK’s first AI-powered coaching platform—and Assistant Headteacher at St Augustine’s Catholic College. This blog is part of a wider mission to support educators through meaningful reflection, not performance metrics. It documents the journey of building Starlight from the ground up, and explores how AI, when shaped with care, can reduce workload, surface insight, and help teachers think more deeply about their practice. Rooted in the belief that growth should be private, professional, and purposeful, The Insight Engine offers ideas and stories that put insight—not judgment—at the centre of development.
