This Christmas, We Look to the Star

On the 21st of December, we reach the shortest day of the year and the longest night. For centuries, people have marked this moment with hope — because from here, the light returns. It is no accident that Christmas sits here, at the darkest point. And it is no accident that the central symbol of the season is a star.

A star above a stable. A star at the top of a tree. A small light that helps people find their way. This feels like the right moment to pause and to take stock.

One Year of Starlight

Just over a year ago, Starlight was an idea. A conviction, really. That professional reflection could be quieter. Kinder. More human. That observation did not need to be feared. That feedback could support growth without judgement. That technology, used carefully, could remove anxiety rather than amplify it.

Today, hundreds of teachers across the UK are using Starlight. Thousands of lessons have been uploaded. Schools of every shape and size have trusted us with their time, their practice, and their professionalism. That trust matters.

In a sector rightly cautious about data, surveillance, and accountability, teachers chose reflection over performance. They chose insight over scores. They chose to believe that Starlight was being built with them, not for them. We are deeply grateful for that belief.

Light Without Heat

From the beginning, we have been clear about what Starlight is not. It is not an observation tool designed to catch people out. It is not a grading engine. It is not another system that adds pressure to already full plates. Starlight was built to shine light without heat. To surface patterns. To prompt thinking. To support conversations that already matter. Again and again this year, we have seen something powerful: when fear is removed, honesty appears. When judgement is absent, growth accelerates. When reflection feels safe, teachers lean in. This is the future we are building.

From Solstice to Solstice

We chose the Summer Solstice — 21 June — as our Company Day at STAR21. The longest day. The point of maximum light. A moment to remember why we build. The Winter Solstice is its mirror. Here, in the darkest stretch of the year, we can see what the light has already achieved — and what it might yet become. Because this is not an ending. It is a turning point. From here, the days lengthen. From here, Starlight grows.

Looking Ahead

Next year will be a defining one. We are developing new ways for teachers to reflect on their journeys over time. New tools to help schools see collective strengths without exposing individuals. New ideas that continue to honour trust, professionalism, and autonomy.

And in January, we will take Starlight to BETT, the world’s largest EdTech exhibition, and share what we have built with a global audience — not as a finished product, but as a philosophy made practical. We will stand there quietly confident in what we know to be true:

That insight, handled with care, can change practice. That technology can serve humanity. That light, even when small, still matters.

Thank You

To every teacher who pressed record. To every school that took a chance. To every leader who chose reflection over compliance. Thank you for believing in Starlight. Thank you for helping shape it. Thank you for trusting us at a time when trust is not easily given.

At the darkest point of the year, we look to the star — and remember why we build.

Wishing you a peaceful Christmas and a hopeful new year, from all of us at STAR21.

The Insight Engine is written by Adam Sturdee, co-founder of Starlight—the UK’s first AI-powered coaching platform—and Assistant Headteacher at St Augustine’s Catholic College. This blog is part of a wider mission to support educators through meaningful reflection, not performance metrics. It documents the journey of building Starlight from the ground up, and explores how AI, when shaped with care, can reduce workload, surface insight, and help teachers think more deeply about their practice. Rooted in the belief that growth should be private, professional, and purposeful, The Insight Engine offers ideas and stories that put insight—not judgment—at the centre of development.
